Prospective Majors

Capped Major

The economics major is an impacted major, with a highly competitive admissions process, and thus is capped accordingly. Freshmen admitted to UC Berkeley Fall 2004 and after are allowed to apply to the economics major if, including coursework in progress, they have reached less than or equal to 80 total units OR if they are in their fifth semester of post-high school graduation coursework, whichever comes second. Students cannot apply after the first semester of their junior year unless they have fewer than 80 units including coursework in progress. This total excludes high school enrichment units, e.g. Advanced Placement, International Baccalaureate, or other college units earned prior to high school graduation.

Transfer students admitted to UC Berkeley Fall 2006 and later are required to enroll in missing prerequisites and apply to the major during their first semester at Cal. The unit cap does not apply to transfer students.
